Participation in IMF Preparatory Webinar Series #2 - 2 Oct 2020
Following Vientiane International Mayors Forum in 2017, the International Mayors Forum (IMF) will be held in December 2020 to provide a platform for policy dialogue and knowledge sharing. The Forum will feature presentations and discussions on key aspects related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11, at local level as a means to achieve a better understanding of successes, lessons and specific mechanisms and accelerate the in-depth transformation needed to make our societies inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

In preparation for IMF, UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) organized the series of preparatory webinars. On 24 September, the Preparatory Webinar Series #2: "Local Governments, the Climate Crisis, and a Green Recovery from COVID-19" was held and UNCRD attended as one of the panelists and contributed to the discussion by the leaders and experts from around the world.

Ms. Yokota, Programme Expert on DRR and Water, UNCRD, delivered a presentation on "Water-related Disaster Risk Reduction under the COVID-19 Pandemic". She introduced the activities of the High-Level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), focusing on its recently launched "Principles to Address Water-related Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) under the COVID-19 Pandemic," the Gifu Prefecture's guideline for coping with the flood disasters during the COVID-19 pandemic, and examples of how local government organize the evacuation facility during the recent heavy rainfall/flood events in Japan with some photos. She stressed the importance of water-related disaster preparedness with careful coordination of different stakeholders, which would contribute to the early recovery from the COVID-19.
