Joint Research Project on Recovery Assessment Methods (Technical Advice to ADRC: 2008-2009)

In the case of the 1995 Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, various recovery activities were carried out in the affected areas towards creating sustainable cities. Although many of the activities have been completed, in general, comprehensive research that assesses the outcome is scarce after a disaster, although research is undertaken on an individual basis covering the social, environmental, and economic aspects. The joint research project on recovery assessment methods (for Sustainable Cities) is being conducted as a collaborative project with research institutes in Kobe. Members of the research project include the Asian Disaster Reduction Centre (ADRC), the UNCRD Hyogo Office, the International Recovery Platform (IRP), and the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institute (DRI).

The objectives are to: (a) identify objectives and update data on the recovery process of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake; (b) identify any existing recovery assessment methods, either comprehensively or thematically; (c) suggest possible methods for recovery assessment; (d) verify possible recovery assessment methods; and (e) develop educational material on recovery assessment for developing sustainable cities, which can be distributed to developing countries.
