This is an informal announcement that Chengdu Municipal Government, Sichuan University, United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) will jointly co-organize the Chengdu International Mayors Forum 2016 to be held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China (date to be announced later). The intention of sending this informal announcement is to help you explore travel sponsorship within or outside of your organization. The UN sponsorship available is very limited and is available for a small number of representatives from developing and least developed countries.
The Mayors Forum will provide a platform for Mayors and high-level city officials from developing countries to obtain up-to-date information on city planning, building and management, engage in exchange of information and undergo peer-learning. The Forum seeks to also include Mayors from cities of industrialized countries to participate so that their experience and documentation of best practices could also be exchanged. It is expected that the Forum will not only empower the communities and local authorities to be equipped with capacity for integrated planning and management, but will also assist them in accessing suitable technologies and PPP opportunities to implement those plans and policies. The Forum will contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including SDGs in post-2015 development era.
The Forum will be of three days and will be composed of policy dialogue for effective implementation of SDGs, in particular Goal 11 (for example, governance consideration including vertical integration and consideration on process similar to “local Agenda 21”) and technical sessions on key aspects, such as integrated planning, sustainable city building, including TOD (transit-Oriented Development) and LVC (Land Value Capture), 3Rs and resource efficiency, sustainable waste management, environmentally sustainable transport (EST), building resilience, etc.
As an integral part of the technical programme, a field visit is planned to selected sites for the local host to demonstrate good practices and successful projects with regard to post-earthquake urban resilience, post-disaster reconstruction, urban disaster preparedness programmes.
